Lover’s Concerto 연애소설

This post is courtesy of reader kaye  who reminded me of this movie that I watched what seems like millennia ago! It is no secret that I am not a fan of threesomes which might explain why I did not have this movie with me! But I did indeed watch it already even though it seems I had a different take on it during that first viewing!

A threesome this movie is not. It is a triangle but in no way a threesome! Everybody doesn’t love everybody and yes, that triangle includes a Dude! Back then I guess  I was still green because it was this threesome implication that turned me off this movie in the first place.

So I thank you kaye for reminding me of it because watching it now, it is so not what  I remember it to be and is definitely getting added to my collection. Sure it is not what most would call a GOOD END, more towards the BAD END in fact but it is so worthy the time! If you are curious you should definitely check it out.

Oh yeah, Moon Geun-young was in this! And this was the time when she was in A Tale of Two Sisters (Cute, young and upcoming in 2002). So there is that reason as well…

What killed Soo-in? A broken heart?
Lovers Conserto.mkv - 00276 Lovers Conserto.mkv - 00277
What killed Kyung-hee? Loss of a reason to live (Not love)?

So I know it is a weird place to start but let’s talk about the ending! And by that I mean the death of first Soo-in and then Kyung-hee! These two were sickly since their childhood! In fact they met while in the hospital, a time that Soo-in fell in love, had her first love, in the troublemaker Kyung-hee! We learn of this when Soo-in and Dude talk about their first loves. At the time she was referring to Kyung-hee as a he as not to give away the secret and it was only because it came back to me as this was not my first viewing that I knew right away that she was talking about Kyung-hee.

Since then the two have never been separated! One thing was for sure though, Soo-in was already in love with Kyung-hee and so even as we are introduced to the Dude, who apparently falls in love at first sight with Soo-in (even though he ends up falling in love with Kyung-hee) *rolls eyes*, Soo-in is so uninterested you would be really hard pressed to find someone less interested in a confession of love!

Her love was clear from beginning to end and it was only Kyung-hee that was hard to read! At times she came off as being close to Soo-in only by duty or responsibility and not out of want of being with Soo-in. The fight they have, which was brought on by Kyung-hee herself due to the jealousy she felt on seeing Dude and Soo-in despite being the one that had coerced Soo-in in going to keep the guy company (because at the time she believed, and it was somewhat true that Dude was in love with Soo-in) but she pushed Soo-in and when they were looking good she got jealous and started a fight.

Even though the fight was resolved mere minutes later! Kyung-hee had to turn back and ran back to Soo-in because even then it was just too much.

At this moment in time though we did not know that Kyung-hee too was sickly. She seemed almost completely healthy and even in the beginning Soo-in was kind of okay too but she got gradually worse and I think it had more to do with Kyung-hee than the disease reaching critical point.

We learn that Soo-in knew that Dude’s feelings had changed and he loved Kyung-hee now and also that Kyung-hee had developed feelings for him. That one time that she was sure that they were in love is when she got so bad she had to be hospitalised. Coincidence? I think not!

Which brings me to think that Soo-in gave up the fight because she had lost Kyung-hee! Kyung-hee was everything to her. Her first love, the source of her life since that fated moment in her child hood! Could she have been able to leave the hospital had she not met Kyung-hee? I think not! At the time when she got major surgery, we saw that Kyung-hee had given her strength when she had snuck into the operation room with her under the covers!

Kyung-hee was Soo-in’s life. When she lost Kyung-hee she lost the will to live and I believe this with all my heart.

Then there is Kyung-hee. Kyung-hee who had been almost 100% healthy all through out their adulthood and never showed signs of being sick since their childhood. But then suddenly when Soo-in dies she is in worse condition? But that even starts a bit earlier just before Soo-in dies. her sickness comes back to her slowly just enough to be hospitalised again. This is after things get complicated between the three and it is no longer as simple as loving just Soo-in.

it is not long after Soo-in dies that Kyung-hee follows her! These two were so connected that they were each other’s life force and they did not even know it! I don’t think that Kyung-hee even got it in the end! I know Soo-in knew it! her feelings never changed! She was in love with Kyung-hee since she met her, all through out meeting Dude and all the way till she died!

The confession of love, the very last words that Soo-in spoke in her life, they were so true and so filled with finality that anyone thinking otherwise would burn for the sheer sin of it! What was hard was Kyung-hee’s reply! It was quick, too casual and while that was true to her personality it made me feel a bit mad at her. There was this look on Soo-in’s face after the reply that made me think she was going to clarify what she meant but she let it go and instead chose to settle for a cute moment of the two touching their fingers E.T style!

But is it true to call in a one-sided love? I don’t think so! This is also why I don’t think of the ending of them both dying being a BAD END! Even if Kyung-hee kind of married Dude, she ended up dying alone anyway. And as she went she was sure she would meet Soo-in again in the after-life herself! I think she figured it out too late what her real feelings were and just how much Soo-in loved her which made her aware of what the implications of her actions would have meant.

This is backed up by the scene where she tries Dude’s trick of turning the clock back just so she could have the last few moments with Soo-in once again to have the opportunity to correct her mistakes, to do things differently. To let Soo-in know just how much she meant to her.

But it was too late! Which is why she believes it strongly that she will be seeing Soo-in in the next life and I think she will! Fate was in support of their love. When one died the other soon followed, despite having shown a healthy life!

What a love! Despite what they went through, despite how bad their health was, they seemed to have had a full and happy life! Soo-in lived to her full potential, even some, and if it weren’t for Dude stealing Kyung-hee’s heart, I am sure they would have lived longer but perhaps then they would not have known , at least Kyung-hee would not have known the extend of their love and need for one another. At least that moment of doubt and heartache is gone and they can have happily ever after in their afterlife!

Good movie. You guys should definitely check it out!

This movie actually reminds me of another kinda threesome that is titled ‘The Bufferfly’. No, not the HK Butterfly but the Indonesian Butterfly one.
