No one, that’s who! Not that I am saying that Homura-chan is insane, but more on that later. Right now, I was really surprised when a certain tumblr-er started posting caps of this movie, which if you remember, it has already made a pass through Yuri Goggles before now. I was shocked because being one of the movies I am looking forward to this year, I had a look out for it and from experience of course, I knew that if it ain’t on any of the Japanese online shops, then it doesn’t exists yet on DVD.
Seems like I was wrong. Not that it did exist on said sites but because it did not and yet it existed on a non-Japanese etailer! Strangely, it is on Amazon UK! It has been on there for a while actually. And so while I was wondering WTF Japan was doing, I did not waste time in acquiring it and watching!
And by the gods! This was so not what I was expecting! Seriously anyone who watched the trailer will feel the same way! Through most of the scenes in this movie I had a WTF expression on my face! Seriously, this was so not what I was expecting. Strangely while I would despise the turn this movie took any other time, and by that I mean that I was always getting annoyed when our lesbian girls always turned out to be crazy as if to find a reason to kill them off! Even though that is exactly, and I mean exactly, what happened in Shady, this time I had a completely opposite reaction to it.
I am now in love with crazy lesbian characters!
mimpi*β as Misa
Okamura Izumi as Izumi
Ah Izumi-chan! The last time I loved a villain (if she indeed is one) like I do this girl was all the way back in 2005 when Diva came onto Blood+ and totally stole the whole show. She not only stole the show but my heart as well to become my all time favourite Anime character. She reigned for 6 wholes years, until Akemi Homura came onto the scene in 2011. No other character has yet to de-throne her and I doubt there will ever be.
I was reminded of that when Izumi happened! I was expecting some slice-of-life yuri teasing movie not this! And this movie was so well crafted. I kept finding myself being surprised by things even though I shouldn’t be. Like almost at the half-way mark, I knew this relationship was going into some deep waters and also that Izumi was a few sane degrees off. But despite knowing that, as the movie progressed I was gasping in surprise as things heated up.
I was theorising about all the worst ending since I knew Izumi was not the Izumi we were expecting but the ending we got was most definitely not one of them. I mean Izumi was kind of messed up, well, towards the end is when we knew she was messed up but I wasn’t expecting red alert levels of messed-up. Actually what we saw was not the worst of things. The directors spared us the gruesome ending but unlike what other might have thought, which I think would be gratitude, I on the other hand had a whole different reaction to that.
Indeed, if there was one thing I absolutely hated and I find the only flaw of this movie, would be the ending end that we never saw! I am losing you right now, aren’t I. I didn’t want to spoil this movie much like usual so I was only going to cut the surface but alas. Prepare thy self!
So, from the beginning of the movie, there is a girl missing from school. She is thought dead after going missing for so long. That girl was Aya and later we find out that she and Izumi were actually best friends to the point that Izumi chose to go to that school only because of Aya. But High School as we all know changes people. Aya was not spared and it seems, if Izumi was telling the truth, though for some reason I don’t think that she has ever lied to Misa even once (She really loved Misa), Aya began to bully Izumi when they got to High School because that is what status does to girls. If you want to be one of them cool girls, you do what they do or be done to what they do.
But Izumi is no other girl that would just lay back and let fate take its course. Nope. She took matters into her own hands and turned Aya into her pet, literally! She tied her up and locked her in a cage that was actually the closet! Yep, Izumi is awesome! Even her sense of humour is awesome! Any way, you might wonder how she got away with it? What about her parents?!
Well, here is the thing! Izumi is awesome! Oh I already said that did I? Well excuse me! Any way, Izumi did not keep Aya in her home but rather in the home of their maths teacher! I know! She is that awesome! How though? Well, she had the teacher wrapped around her finger with not only one, but both of the only two powers that are said to drive people (according to Napoleon) which are Fear and Interest. She has power of interest over him because she seduced him, they took precure which can be used as evidence and apparently pictures of them doing other really intense things. Then she has power of fear over him because she knows and has the videos of him apparently placing spy cameras in the girls’ toiled at school.
Of course he would have no choice but to obey every single word of hers. So she uses him to hide Aya. And before you go off wondering why that ass isn’t in prison yet, well, worse fate was awaiting him, thank to none other than Izumi of course. Yep, I am gonna say it – She is awesome! Any way she catches him one day trying to rape Aya. He got a fork in the throat! I kid you not! Not knives or some other head basher! But a knife – to the throat!
Izumi is awesome!
Sadly Misa chose that moment to walk in! Thing get from bad to worse. Aya not knowing when to shut her trap got a knife as well, to the throat! This time Misa was present but even if she hadn’t seen that, Aya was awash plenty is the two dead bodies’ blood. What happens next, we are not shown but instead told!
Which really, really pissed me off!
I wanted to see the emotions in both Izumi and Misa’s faces during the deeds that followed! I wanted to see what their real feelings were. I mean I know that Izumi actually loved Misa. She killed off pets because they got to share Misa’s love for crying out loud! She cried her heart out after slapping Misa because Misa had doubted her! She would have never hurt Misa at all even if we saw her point a knife at her once before when she asked her to kill off Aya so they could ran away together. That was before Aya lost her shit and started wailing which led to Izumi shutting her up forever but I you could see the pain in her eyes when Misa was telling her best-friends would never point knives at each other. She apparently did not get the memo when Izumi told her of Aya and her story.
Speaking of, I actually found myself liking Misa-‘s character less and less as time went on. It was probably just me but I don’t think she changed at all. I don’t know if it is just bad acting or bad character development but her expressions, or wrong expression or was it lack of expression, really got on my nerves as the movie progressed. She did not display feelings that a person in her position would when next to Izumi. I guess there is another thing I did not like about the movie. Only two negatives though so we are still safe.
As to what happened that we weren’t shown is this – Apparently Misa ran for her life but with all the blood in her way, she kept tripping so it was easy for Izumi to catch up to her. She did not explicitly say that Izumi was out to kill her. In her state of mind at the time, anyone would think that their life was in danger so they would all be in survival mode. Which might excuse her for what she had apparently done. Which was, according to the testament taken, that she was afraid izumi was going to kill her so she grabbed an umbrella nearby, they were by the door at that time, and stabbed Izumi. Fearing still that Izumi would live and kill her anyway, she continuously stabbed her until her chest was a mess of goo!
That is what she says happened! Which pissed me of to no end that they chose to deliver such an important moment in such a stale way. These two girls who loved each other so much, come to the point of killing each other and they did not frikking show us such a dear moment! Like, AYFKM?!!
Misa turned herself in apparently after that and she was released because it was concluded that she did it in self-defence. And at that time I realised that the whole movie had been a re-telling of events passed already as Misa’s testimony. From the beginning of the movie, the narration was being told in the past tense so I guess I should have caught that but like I said, this movie is very good at hiding facts in plain sight.
Now, normally the fact that the ending was raped of us like that wouldn’t annoy me plenty but later on after Misa has been released and back in school, she does a thing that Izumi did earlier on in the movie. That scene was strange. Misa wasn’t present when Izumi did it first but what she did was the exact same thing in the exact same sequence with the exact same words as Izumi. It was so freaky. And what they said was…
Which got me all hot and bothered! Misa told lies, but what were those lies! before when she was with Izumi, she did not tell lies. She had no reason to lie. So the lies she speaks of should have been in the testimony she gave about the incident. But what exactly did she lie about? WTF happened there after they cut the scene to the prison!?!! That’s what pisses me off! Something happened afterwards between Izumi and Misa that wasn’t told, wasn’t shown and we shall never find out!
I am confident that Misa too loved Izumi. Whereas she wasn’t that crazy about Izumi’s actions before, she now seemed to be almost obsessed with what Izumi used to do. She is almost turning into Izumi herself, well, except on the outside. Sorry Misa, you will never be as cute!
As for the yuri, this is where I draw the line of word spoilers. You will have to experience it for yourselves. But that doesn’t mean I can’t post pics..Fufufu. here we go…
